Opel

Compact Van

Concept (CVC)

For Release:

October 18, 1999

Russelsheim - Designers and engineers at Opel’s

International Technical Development Center are

already prepared for the winter. The lifestyle

concept car, based on the Zafira compact van, is

the perfect accompaniment to frost and winter

sport activities.

The five-door Compact Van Concept (CVC)

vehicle is equipped with permanent

four-wheel-drive and, thanks to its 18-inch (457.2

mm) wheels, enjoys 1.17 inches (30 mm) more

ground clearance than the standard version. As

well as the new, dramatically styled face, what

particularly marks this six-seater concept vehicle

as something special are a plethora of clever

design innovations. These include a 15.76 inch

(40 cm) wide, 5.52 inch (14 cm) tall and 6.56 foot

(two meter) long roof box. This is cleverly

integrated into the concept’s panorama glass roof,

can be accessed from the interior of the vehicle

and provides room for items such as scarves,

gloves and ski goggles. Other innovations include

the heated cubby box between the middle row’s

individual seats and two heated cupholders in the

middle console. Integrated into the inside of the

rear hatch is a plastic fairing which doubles as a

toboggan.

Coupled with the use

of robust materials, the

interior can be

described as

multi-functional thanks

to the middle row’s

individual seats which

can be moved 21

inches (540mm)

lengthwise and their

innovative folding

mechanism. As a

whole, the cockpit is clearly and logically laid

out. The centrally mounted monitor for the

navigation system is equipped with two twist and

press buttons enabling the quick and easy

operation of other on-board systems.

A prototype aluminum ECOTEC-Direct engine

with gasoline direct injection sits underneath the

dramatically-styled front section. The 2.2-liter unit

powering the concept develops 150 HP

(110kW/150 hp) and operates via a five-speed

gearbox.

Thanks to its advanced engine and a creative

interior design approach, the CVC is the latest

example of the Opel philosophy of providing high

technology products for a broad customer base at

affordable prices.
